A Short History of Boxer Briefs

15

It was in the year 1990 when the initial boxer briefs were sold in the market. However, even before this time, there were already some underwear manufacturers who made these but they were branded in a different term. They called these undergarments "mid-length briefs" or "thigh length briefs". Even if it was marketed in a different design, they are still like the "two-part union suits' bottom half" that was worn during the 1910s.

At current, many American, British, Canadian, Australian and French teenagers prefer wearing boxer briefs rather than the conventional briefs. This is due to its proximity on both boxer shorts and briefs. As many attest to the looseness of boxer shorts, others also feel that regular briefs are too restrictive. Thus, there was even a suggestion to have a medium to oversized pouch built inside so as to add more space for the male genitalia and have the testicles positioned forward.

For athletes, boxer briefs have become a common trend. This is in addition or instead of the so-called "jockstrap". It is regarded by many men as comfortable to wear due to its "form-fitting coverage" that is meant for a man's midsection. This would also be from his waist towards the thighs, although boxer briefs are worn along the waist.

There are many designs for boxer briefs these days. This would include:

• Snap/button front
• Access flap
• Pouch
• No fly
• Woven
• Knitted

Another type of boxer brief is called the "trunk". It is a bit shorter in the leg part and it is commonly used as a type of swimwear. Others prefer to use it under their board shorts. Unlike the typical boxer briefs, a trunk provides a slightly revealing touch. This is due to the fact that a distinct outline of the male genitalia is apparent underneath, when used.

Thus, unlike the usual briefs, boxer briefs do not generally have that tight elastic feature around the leg part. These undergarments rely on the actual elasticity of whatever fabric was used. This is for support and in order to provide more comfort on the "leg openings".
